Everything the Big Little Lies Cast Has Said About Returning for a Season 3

Nicole KidmanReese Witherspoon and more Big Little Lies cast members have teased the possibility of returning for season 3 of the HBO series.

In November 2019, Kidman revealed that she would be open to another season if the writers were also on board.

“If there is a third one, all of it will come from the writers, and that’s amazing,” she explained to Deadline at the time. “Liane [Moriarty] is deeply talented. David [E. Kelley] is deeply talented, and the combination of them is extraordinary. So, where they would take it, I have no idea. You have to bow down to the writers, because that really is where it starts. Unless you’re a director/writer, and then you write it. But this show, we’ll see what Liane can muster, and if she has an interest in it.”

Meanwhile, Witherspoon opened up about the possibility of reuniting the cast for another season, however, she noted that it would be challenging without director Jean-Marc Vallée after his passing.

“Jean-Marc Vallée’s passing was really hard on us,” she explained to The Hollywood Reporter in October 2022. “He was our collaborator. He was our friend. He was our brother. So much of that series was born of his imagination and his creativity, so it is hard to imagine a future without him. But there is certainly a deep desire for all of us to connect and create those characters again. I’m not sure logistically how it could be done because everyone is so busy. It [certainly] couldn’t be done right away. Down the road? Maybe.”

In November 2023, Kidman seemingly confirmed a third season was in the works. “We will be bringing you a third one, FYI,” she said during a LGPA event.

Kathryn Newton

Newton played Witherspoon’s character Madeline’s daughter, Abigail Carlson, on seasons 1 and 2 of Big Little Lies and she’s ready to reprise the role. “I would definitely go back. To work with those women again? Yes. I would jump, too,” Newton told The Hollywood Reporter in February 2024. “I would be there. So, call me. I’m waiting for my call. Let’s go.”

The actress noted that a third season would be a great way to honor season 1 director Jean-Marc Vallée, who died in 2021. “Jean-Marc changed my life. He was a life-changer and a rockstar. He called me ‘a rockstar,’” Newton said, reflecting on her journey after Big Little Lies. “I think that show was the best project I’ve ever done. It changed TV in a lot of ways. There’s been so many amazing TV shows since Big Little Lies with the same influence as cinema.”

Nicole Kidman

“I loved Big Little Lies because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children and I was thinking I was going to retire,” she explained during a November 2023 Q&A session at a Florida event hosted by the LPGA during the CME Group Tour Championship, per Deadline. “And then this situation came along where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show and create that show and then all of you watched it and made it a massive success. And we will be bringing you a third one, just FYI. Yeah.”

In January 2024, Kidman told Entertainment Tonight that she and the show’s creative team have a “timeline” for season 3, adding, ‘We are always cooking things up!”

She told Variety later that month that she’s been “texting [Reese] every day” about the show’s next chapter. “We can’t say anything more,” Kidman said. “We’ve got to start keeping our mouths shut. … We’ve got to button it.”

Shailene Woodley

“We all constantly say, ‘When are we doing season three? How do we make that happen?’” she told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2021. “I’d like to say, knock on wood, that it is happening.”

In December 2023, Woodley said she was excited about how the kids on BLL would need to be older.

“I think what excites me about the possibility of a third season, more than what I could think of with Jane, is the fact that these children [on the show] are not children anymore,” Woodley told Harper’s Bazaar. “They’re teenagers now! Jean-Marc Vallée, our brilliant filmmaker who brought Big Little Lies together and really made it what it was, sadly passed away, and at his funeral last year, all of the kids came and the cast was there. So I’m looking around and I’m like, ‘Where’s our kids?!’ Their voices have dropped, they all have their teenage situation happening [waves hands over face to imply acne], and the angst is kicking in, and that, to me, is what is exciting about the possibility of a third season. What does life look like for those people who are not children anymore?”

Zoë Kravitz

“I don’t think it is,” she told GQ in November 2022 when asked if the show would ever return for a third season.“We talked about doing a Season 3 a lot. Unfortunately, Jean-Marc Vallée, our incredible director, passed away this last year. It’s heartbreaking. I can’t imagine going on without him. He really was the visionary for that show. Unfortunately, it’s done.”

Laura Dern

“I’m gonna be shy about it,” Dern teased to Entertainment Tonight in October 2022. “I mean, we would all love nothing more, we’re just like family — just very lucky. I say, let’s hold out hope. Let’s keep asking, it might just come true.”

“We want to do it,” she told costar Laura Dern while video-chatting in May 2020. “We’re kind of waiting. We’re trying guys. We’re trying to come up with the right story.”
